Boca was a Little Blonder

Hello my sweets! I apologize for being gone for so long again-I really am going to be better! You see, my dear friend surprised me with a trip to Boca Raton Florida for five days and it was simply fabulous! I got to relax on the beach, drink some yummy strawberry daquiri's and try out some new ensembles-which will be posted very soon. We forgot to bring the cord to connect the camera to the laptop so we were unable to update blogs. But now I'm back yay!

Seeing as our first day of travel was a whopping seven hours thanks to connecting flights, my friend and I stocked up on as many magazines as possible and combined with a few extras we snagged on the way back-it ended at a whopping 16. I got so many ideas from them that I tabbed a few of  my favorite pages and looks and whipped up a couple inspirational collages. Enjoy!

The theme for this was classic, minimalist and feminine. I was obsessed with the stark collars and feminine lace and skirts. This was more editorial based I found, whereas my next two collages leaned toward commercial-interesting indeed! This is one of my current themes for summer: clean, simple, elegant, timeless...

Ramblings of a Teenage Fashionista

I wish people understood that fashion isn't just about looking cute, but is about being creative and expressive. It's innovative, new and not what most people wear. I wish people understood it's how I express myself. I wish people didn't laugh at what they don't understand. I wish I was in New York or San Francisco with other fashionistas rather than stuck in Boulder, CO with people who only wear Uggs, jeans and tshirts. Very judgmental Ugg, jean and tshirt wearers. I like flair, couture, high heels, swishy tulle skirts, vintage clothes, layers, bright accent pieces, clothes that send a message.

I generally get nice compliments on my shoes, my outfits and my hair, but I always tone down my ideas for school because I know what I do is already way different than what everyone else does. Even wearing what I consider pretty average outfits I get looks in the hall and people tease me on days I don't wear heels because they expect it so often, but also tell me how they don't get how or why I do it. They don't know that there are so many more cool and expressive and interesting pieces and combinations I want to wear, that might not get so many compliments.

Tavi from The Style Rookie blogged: "I'm starting to think I know an outfit is my favorite when I get made fun of by high school boys in cars."

I concur.

However, I lack the self assurance and confidence Tavi seems to possess. So I usually wear not what I want but instead what I know appeals to everyone else.

Now you might say: "But Leah, if you love fashion as much as you say you do, then why would you not wear something totally awesome instead of what the blandly dressed general public finds suitable and pleasant?"

And I reply: "Indeed I do love fashion, however this blandly dressed general public isn't always so nice and for someone as self conscious as me this causes some inner turmoil and a high level of discomfort."

I think all the teenage fashionistas should revolt.

Yes, let's have a fashion revolution.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

In fashion you always have to be one step ahead, just to stay current. Fashion in itself is exerimenting and trying for something novel, new, original and unique, and it always keeps you on your toes. However, sometimes for the inspiration to make these advances forward, looking to the past and in vintage magazines can be exactly the trick! Have any of you seen the British show Dr. Who? No? It's great. My friend Olivya introduced me and it's about an immortal doctor who travels through time and space with his comrades. He has this thing called a tardus that transports him, which looks like a little telephone booth but actually is a huge time and space machine.

Great, now you have a better understanding. What would I do with a tardus? Duh, go back in time and go shopping. My favorite era is the 1950's-the dresses and femininity is to die for. Not to mention the great full skirts, modest but oh so vintage appealing swimsuits and the glamour. Was I born in the wrong era? Possibly.

 Several old magazine shoots for magazines like Vogue. The women are so classy-and if I could find a swimsuit like the one in Modess from 1953, I would wear it all summer long! You Can't Stop the Beat

While listening to my little sister sing this great song from hairspray, I was reminded to update some of my current inspirations. I intended to do an outfit, however it was supposed to be rainy (lies) so I just wore a jeans and sweatshirt today and left my amazing dress at home that I will hopefully show tomorrow. Also my apologies I've been a little off on posting regularly, however my schedule has been ridiculously busy and I don't want to post anything that isn't of good quality. But none the less, here we are!

 I've been very into the Parisian idea lately and am contemplating trying a parisian bistro during a night in denver.

 This is the current state my room is in. ^ Clothes and purses and shoes everywhere.

 And a 70's vibe. I like this 70's comeback. A little wary of it at first, but now I'm really lovin it.

 I want this to be my face. Neon big shades and also bright nails. Bright lipstick bright blush bright everything

 This is another look I really want to get into. My outfits are usually super put together and more simplistic classic, but i LOVE this messy, bright, sheer, "your clothing may have been ripped by your cat" look. And sandals. I love heels, but I need a good pair of sandals.

Oh Amber, althouh this dress makes me think of a pineapple and the one worn in Grease (she's called a pineapple) I love it and would wear it to prom were I old enough.

I'm feeling a tad bit under the weather today, (sore throat, headache, lack of energy) and if I end up sick tomorrow, I will be blissfully watching The Last Song repeatedly while drawing clothes I wish I knew how to sew. Speaking of which--my mom has agreed to send me to a fashion summer camp! Yahhooo! Which one, we do not know, but if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them!

Slight Frustration Leads to Improvisation

      I was planning and very excited for, posting a collage of inspiration today. However, blogger has unexpectedly had some issues with the posting of pictures, so that will have to be delayed until tomorrow, when it will hopefully work. However, fear not. I have a backup. I realized that as much as I do thouroughly enjoy the visual aspect of blogging, I often forget one of the main reasons I started: writing. With my schedule being less than flexible, I've often had to suffice with a couple pictures and captions thrown up without time to truly contemplate and express my thoughts. What awoke my mind to this lack of words was a combination of increased time and the blog (one of my favorites) The Fancy Teacup when one of her posts had a beautiful description of scenery and feel and it was even more rewarding than her creative and elegant photography. "Tumbleweeds wander aimlessly across an open expanse of stark beauty that people would not be able to enjoy in place where buildings and residences loom. " This was an excerpt from the post which I highly encourage you reading as well as her other work.So today when my computer absolutely refused to allow any pictures to go up, I was frustrated but also decided that a lack of visual aid, in no way, should hinder me from posting if I so want to.

       One of the subjects that broached my mind was regarding comments and questions I've gotten lately. I've been asked why I do a blog when my schedule is already so packed, and why I put so much effort into looks. I've also received comments pertaining to this interest in fashion resulting in a materialistic or otherwise vain personality. I did not enjoy those implications in the least.

       I do not have a blog because I like to look 'pretty'. There are many people in this world who like to look 'pretty' and have absolutely no interest or intentions of putting it up on the internet for the world to see. Not to mention I don't always get positive feed back, and yet those often seem to be my favorite ensembles, because they are unique and creative and not status quo. I blog because I enjoy fashion as a creative outlet. I can express ideas and emotions through my clothes and looks, which often results in me seeing so much more in a dress or headband than my shopping partners realize. I like to think that a theme or personality can be determined by my presentation, which may seem vain, but is analogous to an artist who interprets thoughts through a painting or a poet with a poem. I enjoy spending that extra bit of time to make my hair and makeup and clothes and shoes cohesive in order to portray a theme, and revel in inventing new ways to wear individual items.

     And as much as some may insist otherwise, your appearance makes a statement about you, whether intended or not. I for one would rather make a statement with high heeled platforms and dresses than jeans and converse. In no way am I saying that others should not express themselves with jeans or tshirts or whatever their hearts desire, I just feel that my way is what best conveys me. I'm most comfortable in high heels, and so I will wear them when I please, not because I'm vain or materialistic, but because they bring me joy when I slip them on in the morning, and give me a sense of self importance and confidence. I also find walking in them easy because I naturally walk on my toes and have since I was one years old. (fun fact) and my mom says that is obviously a sign I was born for high heels.

    In days packed with multiple extracurriculars, inhumane amounts of homework, and little sleep, I spend multiple hours per week on this blog whether it be getting a special look ready in the morning, taking pictures during lunch breaks, or manuevering the technological aspects of posting it (technology has never been my strength). I do all this because it brightens my day. Looking nice gives me confidence, helps me be creative, makes me smile, and getting up the finished post makes me feel accomplished. This experience has gotten my brain working in new ways, inspiring new ideas, and giving me the encouragement and confidence to dress exactly how I want to. And in the end, it's what makes us happy and makes our days a little more pleasant that are really important.
